5 Skin Superfoods and How To Use Them

I like to say skincare is a two-part job. To harness glowing skin, we need to focus on what's happening inside and out. And as a nutritionist, it's my job to target how I feed my skin. Choosing skin superfoods helps me set the foundation for youthful, clear, and resilient skin.

I'M AN OLD PRO

If you've followed me since the beginning, you know that I’ve seriously struggled with my skin. From chronic hormonal acne to head-to-toe eczema I’ve been around the proverbial bar soap.

It wasn’t until I started focusing on skin-friendly nutrition and effective topical support, that things really began to change.

I'm going to break down some of my favourite skin superfoods to help you get glowing skin, from within.

Oh and by the way, these food are simple and easy to find. That's kind of the point. Don't forget, wellness doesn't have to be overwhelming!

5 SKIN SUPERFOODS

👇🏿 👇🏽 👇🏻

Goji Berries

There’s a reason goji berries have earned their title as a superfood. This tiny berry is packed full of nutrients that help our skin.

Here's what goji berries have to offer:

🌱 anti-inflammatory

🌱 anti-aging

🌱 helps heal scaring + skin damage

🌱 boosts skin hydration

Since goji berries actually increase our blood circulation, they work to reduce inflammation of the skin which helps balance uneven skin tone and breakouts.

Thanks to their high antioxidant content, goji berries are great for anti-aging, helping fight off fine lines and wrinkles while preventing + clearing age spots.

Bonus: they're chalk full of minerals, amino acids, vitamin C and carotenoids for even more skin-lovin’ benefits.

Chia Seeds

Our skin loves chia seeds because they’re 👏 full 👏 of 👏 fiber 👏 and healthy fats that help with digestion + detox.

Trust me, when I say: if digestion is running like a well-oiled machine, our skin will glow. Often, skin issues are present as a symptom of poor digestion, which can impact our liver's detox efficiency and hormonal balance.

The omega-3's in chia also help hydrate our skin, leaving it silky smooth.

Parsley

Poor parsley doesn’t get nearly enough credit! This helpful herb does so much more than add flavour and look pretty.

Parsley can help balance our skin's oil production, decrease inflammation, discolouration and acne, all while being anti-aging.

It's an amazing herb for liver-support, one thing we need when we're focusing on nourishing our skin. Trust me, you’ll have a new found love for this leafy green herb!

Ginger Root

Who would've thought that ginger would be such a great skin food?! Most of us know ginger can calm an upset stomach or how helpful it can be for colds + flus. But did you know that it’s actually amazing for you skin?

Just like many of our skin-friendly foods, ginger contains loads of antioxidants, which help reduce hyper-pigmentation due to scarring or age spots. This also makes ginger a wonderful anti-aging food (wrinkles, I never knew ya!).

Also, that flavour kick from ginger is more than just a tasty zing! Similar to goji berries, ginger increases circulation which makes it anti-inflammatory, helping to 👏 reduce 👏redness, 👏 flare 👏 ups 👏 and 👏 breakouts 👏.

Lemon

🍋 Lemon is a tried and true skin favourite. Not only is it full of vitamin C (a powerful antioxidant our skin loves), but it’s also antibacterial and an amazing detoxifier.

Lemon helps maintain the body's alkalinity + supports the liver and digestion. We can thank lemon for contributing to even skin tone, acne-prevention and reducing acne scarring. Major win!

SO, WHAT'S NEXT?

So, now you've got five skin superfoods to help you glow from within!

But did you know one of the biggest contributors to skin issues is stress? If you're struggling with your skin, then worrying can be your biggest enemy. Trust me, I've been there. Feeling constantly stressed about what you're eating, what you're doing wrong and searching for the perfect diet can cause more harm than good.

That's why it's so important to address your relationship with food before you tackle the diet that'll help your skin.

Wellness isn’t supposed to be overwhelming. Our routines (or lack thereof) aren't supposed to cause guilt or shame. Food's here to nourish us, to fuel our bodies and bring us satisfaction.

There is a way to be healthy, enjoy wellness and keep your sanity at the same time.

💛 Swapping wellness-overwhelm for a better relationship with food will change your health (and your skin) from the inside out.
